" CAT is a different animal altogether "
This is a very famous talk around the corner when it comes to MBA entrance exams. Many CAT aspirations go by the rumors and get trapped in the wrong perception about how to go about CAT’s preparation.
After having discussions with numerous students who have cleared CAT and got admissions in IIMs’ prestigious institutes, I can formulate a strategy which in general would work for each individual CAT aspirant. However, the plan and strategy vary from student to student based on the strength and weak areas of each student.
Firstly, you need to know the exact pattern and the level of questions asked in CAT. Then you need to take a few previous years CAT papers to judge and understand the psyche of the examiners.
Secondly, identifying the topics and subtopics and start working on strengthening your basic fundamentals of each topic of each section. Solve a good number of questions to know the kind of variations in questions, developing your own shortcuts and approaches while applying these tricks to the actual CAT questions, and practicing more.
Thirdly, you need to test yourself with a good no of real-time mock tests which should be as close to the actual CAT exam. Just solving and scoring marks in the mocks would not suffice. You need to analyze each and every question of the mock test and resolve to develop different ways of solving those types of questions. Build your strategies to optimize time to get optimal scores in each section enough to first clear the cut-offs’ and then scoring enough to get the top 6 IIM calls. Obviously getting a call is not based only on CAT scores other factors also are included, but it definitely raises your chances of getting the calls.
You need to develop a good reading habit as in reading The Hindu, Indian express or magazines, knowing about the business world, topics like politics, financial policies of governments, stock and market and so on. Need to develop a habit of writing an article review a day and a book review after every book you read. At the same time, you need to start solving at least a puzzle a day and so on.
You require a similar minded group of students to discuss the questions and their approaches and good academic mentors to help you in your course of CAT preparations. I think of an Institute which should have enough students to benchmark you on an all-India basis and also the study material to help you go through the different approaches and variations for each question you attempt.
